“My son chosen and chaste, Let your mother share your wounds. And since, my dear son, I have always kept you in heart, And loyally served you, speak to your mother, make her happy. Though, my dear hope, you are leaving me.”

We have the 1991 version recorded with the London Sinfonietta and Upshaw with David Zinman conducting- it is not such a laboured version as this but the music itself portrays such anguish and inability to escape it that any version would be heartrending. i love this music

    No, might not be Upshaw…
I have the most wonderful version (in my opinion ofcourse:) of the Polish Radio Orchestra (NRSO)….its brilliant…look on Naxos…Somehow I even like it more then the Upshaw version…its something to do with the climax….go to the shop and listen to it…you wont be disappointed…

The vibrato, the phrasing all points to her. Wasn’t trying to be clever, It’s just that I thought that you had asked. It doesn’t matter anyway. It would still retain it’s beauty even if i had sung it!

I don’t know if this is Dawn Upshaw? She was on the Elektra recording, and her voice actually sounds much purer on this.

Why make a comment like that? Are you capable of writing music of this level? And why the S *** isnt that somewhat juvenile? The standard at St Davids is excellent, which you would know if you been there.. Anyway as I said, this was new to me and I now have 3 different recordings and the Upshaw is the better one by far as the tempo seems to be spot on, but then Ive not read the music..

It became famous (infamous) because of this Dawn Upshaw recording. It was extensively broadcast in the early 90’s at the start of ‘Classic FM’ . You’re more likely to hear the **** from Karl Jenkins than this kind of quality in Cardiff though!

Anguish and hopelessness resolves into inner peace in the end. It’s almost like he’s describing gratitute for the release from suffering into the realm of the God that these poor souls believe in. Powerful stuff this!

In Polish it’s Górecki which will give you the correct pronunciation, but for this particular piece it really doesn’t matter. Dawn Upshaw as the soprano makes it immediately identifiable as Górecki.

This is such a poignant symphony, which is not well known and should be. In fact Ive never come across it being performed, though Im sure it must be. I hope that I get the opportunity to hear it being performed live and intend to write to the BBC at St Davids Hall to recommend that they do If you like this then you should listen to the Samuel Barber violin concerto ..
