I have to sing this song soon… And I love it sooo much! Great words and great music!
C’est une chanson inoubliable, une mélodie qui nous reste dans la tête continuellement!
This video-song combination is a fascinating reprise of the psyche of Europe between the two world wars. I can imagine the “get us out of here to an idyllic island” desire given what was happening politically. The piece invokes the hispanic new world through the tango, perhaps even Cuba? I understand the French words were added after the original music, but what better German-French-Spanish yearning could you imagine under the circumstances. Stratas delivers a superb rendition, as always.
Until I discovered this video, I thought that when it came to splendid Spanish music composed by non-Iberians and sung in French, Carmen was a one-shot wonder. Listen to this to see why I was mistaken.
Never heard of Youkali Tango, never heard of Teresa Stratas. Never been so mesmerized by the performance of a total stranger, never been so moved by a song heard for the first time, never been so intrigued by a short video clip shot with such artistry! Thank you for sharing this, Bobby!

A beutiful clip of one of Weill’s n most beutiful songs performed by one of his greatest interpreters. The dance fits the music to perfection.

My beloved had a vinyl album of Teresa Stratas. This reminds me of him, although we never saw
a video redition.

Second best? I wouldn’t want to hear Callas in this repertoire. In this repertoire Stratas is the best.

Votre voix, Madame Teresa Stratas, cela n’est rien d’autre que l’île de Youkali. Merci, Bobby4000.
