How do you transfer songs on iTunes to a different computer?

I got a new computer and I’m wondering how to transfer songs from my old computer to my new computer. I’m wondering if I hook up my iPod with all of the songs with it to the new computer with no songs in iTunes, that either my ipod will put the songs onto the computer, or the computer will delete all of the songs off of my iPod…what should I do?

mp3 songs are data files copy the data to a cd-r for safe keeping then put the cd in your new computer and copy the data files to that computer.
