As you know, ITMS (iTunes Music Store) tracks are in the protected AAC format. That means only iTunes software and iPod hardware can play them. There’s a couple of different ways to convert those songs to mp3, which is arguably just an exercise of fair use rights.
1. Burn the tracks to a CD (using iTunes), and rip the songs off the CD to mp3 format. You can use iTunes, Windows Media Player, or a host of other software to do the rip. When you burn songs to a CD, they are converted to a non-compressed non-protected audio format like a WAV file. You lose a little fidelity in the conversion.
2. Buy software that essentially does the same thing without using the actual CD media. Tunebite is one such program, but there are others. Tunebite will even update your iTunes library file, in case you want to continue to use iTunes to manage your music.
Unfortunately, I haven’t found anything yet that will automatically convert your ITMS tracks to mp3 whenever you buy them. It’s a manual process.
