How do you convert all songs to itunes format without getting duplicates?

Itunes converted half of my 1500 songs to WMA. When I log on, it starts over again from the beginning, creating multiple copies of my songs. Now I have a mess of songs and all I want to do is have 1 copy of each song in itunes format for my ipod. Is there an easy way to start from a clean slate and get this task accomplished?

use ctrl+A and the delete key, it will ask if you want to move to recycle bin or keep files choose keep files otherwise they will be deleted, they file+ add folder to library and choose the folder where the itunes format are they will then process and appear in yout itunes library!
